Pre-Order Kick-Off & Story Time: Sophia N. Lee & Isabel Roxas present Holding On
Filipina talents, author Sophia N. Lee and illustrator Isabel Roxas come together to celebrate the advent of their picture book Holding On, a warm and moving story of a young girl in the Philippines who uses music to connect with her grandmother as her memory fades.
Holding On is inspired by beloved summers spent with my grandparents in Tarlac. My Lola would cook all my favorites — sticky-sweet tocino, bola-bola, and twice-fried adobo, and there’d be dancing as my Lolo sang and played ukelele in the mornings, all throughout the day. There was a dream-like slowness to life there, and everything felt incredibly tender and safe,” Lee added. “It’s also a record of how I learned to grapple with loss after the death of my Lolo, and as I watched my grandmother lose her own memories to Alzheimer’s disease.”
“This book is a portal to summers spent in the Philippine countryside: where carabaos roam, and the hot sun blazes or the rain falls in sheets; where one is awash in fresh mangos, people, music, and hugs,” said Roxas about the book.
Holding On is the first Filipino picture book to be released by Big 5 publisher Simon & Shuster under its Children's imprint Atheneum.
